Helping homeowners stay safe and healthy in their homes!

Habitat for Humanity Greater Salt Lake Area is known for building affordable homes. Did you know we also help families maintain safe and healthy homes through our Critical Home Repair Program (CHiRP)

Safe housing is part of your overall health

Many issues in the home can affect our health and well-being. For example, uneven flooring is a trip hazard, and one in five falls among seniors causes a serious injury.  Moisture problems and air quality can exacerbate lung issues like asthma and COPD.  Faulty electrical and appliances are a fire hazard.

CHiRP can address many needs, such as

  • Leaking roof.
  • Broken and missing windows.
  • Leaking faucets and plumbing.
  • Mold.
  • Broken and missing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Damaged flooring.
  • Accessibility for impaired mobility.
  • Faulty electrical.
  • Faulty water heater, furnace, and A/C.

How CHiRP Works

Our CHiRP team performs a home inspection to identify critical repair needs and ensure that people with impaired mobility can safely enter and move about their homes. We take care of all the details and work with experienced contractors who perform high-quality work in a timely manner.

There is no upfront cost! Qualifying applicants may receive a grant up to $5,000 toward the project cost. We make the remaining cost affordable by providing a 10-year, 0% to 3% interest loan or deferred title lien. We are able to provide this program with funding from the State of Utah, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and other generous supporters.

CHiRP is not an emergency repair program. Projects must be planned and take several months to complete.

Are you eligible?

If you are a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien who owns a home on a foundation in Utah, you may be eligible.  Habitat for Humanity Greater Salt Lake Area processes inquiries for the entire state.  Our program serves Salt Lake County, Tooele County, and Davis County, and we work with other Habitat affiliates to serve the rest of the state. Certain restrictions apply; eligibility does not guarantee approval.
